A Guide to Coping with a Terminal Illness

A Guide to Coping with a Terminal Illness

Life is a cycle and everyone is standing in line. Nobody knows exactly where they are standing, but somehow, you’ve been called to move up front. Is it unfair? Maybe. But most people go without even knowing it’s already their turn to pass. The order is random, it is not anybody’s fault.

Take a deep breath, give yourself time to get ready, then make a step forward. Nobody said it was going to be easy, but here are some suggestions that could help you cope:

  • Determine, acknowledge, and accept your emotions.
  1. What you feel is valid.

You don’t have to explain it to anyone. It’s okay. People who have just learned they are afflicted with a terminal illness often undergo several waves of emotions such as denial, anger, fear, or sadness. It’s perfectly normal.

  2. Vent it out.

Choose an outlet that will help you channel all those negative energies in a healthy manner. One of the best options is writing because it allows you to express your thoughts even if you don’t feel like talking. Try keeping a journal.

  • Reach out and communicate.
  1. Find your voice.

Sometimes it’s hard to speak up. You don’t have to go through this alone. If you’re not comfortable with sharing about your condition to your close friends, family, or loved ones yet, know that there are different support groups available.

  2. Share your thoughts, respond.

Don’t isolate yourself. Having a conversation about your illness is one way to help you get by. Counseling is a good place to start.

  • Understand your illness and know your options.
  1. Stay informed.

Ask your doctor about it, do a bit of research on the internet, read. Be aware of the changes your body will undergo. The more you know, the better you can manage your condition as it progresses in time.

  2. Keep Moving, plan ahead.

There’s still a lot of things to enjoy. Don’t let your terminal illness define who you are. Take care of yourself. Find delight in your hobbies. Have pride in your achievements. Make new memories. Spend time with your loved ones. Live life.
